Ann Gillen

Invited to collaborate on a print project at the Neiman Center in the spring of 2024, Ann Gillen realized an edition of her artist’s book, Becoming, for which she had made the initial maquette in 1984. Her work as a sculptor ranges from large-scale public works in metal to curvaceous tabletop sculptures in marble to delicately worked abstractions in paper that live in hidden places on her studio floor. The bold, graphic images in Becoming - a visual early autobiography of sorts - display her adept hand as both a sculptor and draftsman.

Ann Gillen (born Brooklyn, NY) studied industrial design at Pratt Institute and received a MFA from Columbia University in 1968. Her work has been included in numerous exhibitions and installations including at the Getty Research Institute, Los Angeles; Fogg Art Museum at Harvard University, Cambridge; and the Smithsonian American Art Museum, Washington DC. Among her most iconic public sculptures is Flying Red, 1973-87, which has been located on Third Ave between 54th and 55th Streets in Manhattan since 1987.
