Fia Backström

Invited to work at the Neiman Center in 2015, Fia Backström produced a series of four prints, Touching Sensible, using the techniques of woodcut and photogravure.  Her multidisciplinary artworks defy strict categorization encompassing written text, magazine ads, conversations and the production of events. 

Fia Backström (b. 1970, Sweden) attended the University of Sweden and Columbia University for undergraduate studies and received an MFA from Konstfack Royal College of Arts and Crafts in Stockholm. She represented Sweden at the Venice Biennale in 2011 and was included in the Whitney Biennial in 2008. Her work has been included in numerous international exhibitions including the Museum of Modern Art, NY (2010); Centre George Pompidou, Paris (2019); Moderna Museet, Stockholm (2019, 2010); and the Serpentine Gallery, London (2007) among others. Backström has lectured widely on her work and has been a visiting artist at New York University, Yale University, and Maryland Institute College of Art.
