Garrett Ball

Epiphany, 2020
Linoleum relief print
36 x 24 inches
Artist proof

Epiphany is the first print in a six print series which explores generally the stages that a cycle or process goes through in its development. All pieces in the series connect together thematically and with shared visual content at the sides top and bottom forming a larger gestalt piece of 9’x12’ or larger. This is an artist proof as the entire series is soon to be printed in edition.

Epiphany introduces the series and represents the initiating stages of the cycle. It is the first spark of inspiration that begins the cycle of growth, it is unrelated component parts beginning to interact and form together.

The separate stages in this series are:

Epiphany
Coalescence
Genesis
Expansion
Burden
Collapse

The stages form a loop that cycles back into each other in a never ending process. I chose to take on this large work because it is useful for me personally to think about things in my life through stages of growth and progression. It reminds me that things that don’t seem as developed as they should be are growing and need to be cared for and adapted to fit their purpose. Likewise things that may seem burdensome or tedious may continue to edge towards their own destruction or release as pieces to be reforged into something new and at the beginning of its life.

After a year and a half of work devoted work to this one series, greatly aided by the quarantine and the opportunity to work on pieces ceaselessly with every waking hour, the carving of the series is complete. Soon with greater access to appropriate printmaking facilities I look forward to bringing this labor of love into full fruition.”
